From the Farmer

Here’s a nice word to describe this weather, “sultry’. It conjures visions of sitting on the veranda sipping sugar tea. Really, it won’t that be nice.

The best job on the farm this week will be washing lettuce and greens. At least that’s the one I would pick if I had my druthers. Immersing your hands in a 100 gal tub of ice cold well water does wonders to mitigate the heat and humidity and yuckiness during the next few days.

I’m sorry to say that we have had problems the sugar snap peas. We lost the first planting all together. The seed just wouldn’t germinate. And the second planting is spotty. And now the heat. They just weren’t meant to be.

I know many of you really look forward to them so we are making them available for u-pick this week. Please feel free to pick whenever you can. If you would like pick at 8:00 in the morning or 8:00 in the evening, it doesn’t matter to me. The field is located on Spring Street next to the asparagus (tall, ferny looking plant). They will be marked by an orange cone. When picking sugar snaps make sure you flip the vines over because that’s where the peas are. Hold the plant with one hand and pick with the other so you don’t pull the plants up. The amount to take will be on the “U-Pick” board.

See you at the farm,

And now, Blueberries!

Blueberries are $4.50/lb.

Blueberry picking just started July 1, the earliest we have ever seen them. There is an admission fee of $5.00 to get into the field which will be credited towards your berries when you return to the farm stand. Blueberry picking usually last about 3-4 weeks so get them before they are gone.
